What is Activated Carbon?

Activated carbon (activated charcoal) is a highly porous organic material. It has a large internal surface area and pore size, giving it the ability to adsorb a wide range of organic compounds in liquid or gaseous form. These include biocides, herbicides, chlorine compounds, solvents, and more.
It is produced either through a thermal activation process (steam activation) or through chemical activation (chemical activation). Various materials are used as substrates, such as charcoal, coconut carbon, bituminous coal, lignite, semi-anthracite, and others.
It is commercially available, typically in three forms: powder (powder-PAC), granular (granular-GAC), and extruded/pellet. There is also a large number of different types, such as simple, impregnated, and more. The degree of its adsorptive capacity is determined by the origin of the raw material, as well as the activation process.

Potable Water

Potable water (or drinking water) is produced in municipal water treatment plants from surface water or groundwater. In these natural water sources, organic contaminants are presents. They can cause taste and odor problems, and/or can be harmful to human health: either directly, or as precursors in the formation of disinfection byproducts (DBPs). Adsorption of many organic contaminants by activated carbon has proven to be the most effective and cost-efficient technology.

Air purification

Air purification is a standard long-term application for NORIT®. Removal of a variety of impurities from industrial exhaust flow, indoor air, or climate control units are needed to protect people and the environment.

Oil and gas

Oil refineries, natural gas producers and related industries use a multitude of NORIT® activated carbon products. Our well-proven grades purify various hydrocarbon streams, resulting in high quality products. NORIT® activated carbons also purify process chemicals before their re-use, making them more efficient and reducing costs.
